Biotechnology focus areas in health include increasing biomedical knowledge and developing medical technologies, including new medicines and genomic discovery.
Examples of biotechnology research include:
- Identifying the relationships between cell functioning and disease/wellness
- Using knowledge about genes and cell functioning to develop new medical treatments
- Understanding immune system functioning in order to develop new treatments for medical conditions like tuberculosis and asthma
- Manipulating cells, tissues, organs, or whole organisms (e.g. for assisted reproduction and tissue engineering)
New Zealand has strengths in the development of innovative treatments for:
- asthma
- diabetes
- cancer
- cardiovascular disease
- osteoporosis and bone health
- nerve and brain disorders
