The Maurice Wilkins Centre for Molecular Biodiscovery

The Maurice Wilkins Centre for Molecular Biodiscovery is a New Zealand Centre of Research Excellence, named in honour of the New Zealand-born Nobel Laureate, and hosted by The University of Auckland.

It was opened in 2003 as one of seven New Zealand centres of research excellence, as part of a Government initiative to establish research facilities that brought together New Zealand's "best and brightest" to foster, promote and advance knowledge.

The Wilkins Centre has an overarching mission to combat serious human disease, in particular diabetes, cancer, heart disease and infectious diseases. Central to this mission is an integrated multidisciplinary approach that The Wilkins Centre has built around a core of world class New Zealand groups with expertise in structural and molecular biology, proteomics, medicinal and synthetic chemistry, immunology, bioengineering and mathematical modelling; a grouping that is unique in New Zealand.

This Centre brought together eight major research groups within the University of Auckland, and involves researchers at other universities and Crown Research Institutes. Each of these research groups has its own areas of scientific interests. Their common goal of research excellence in the biomedical and biotechnology field and the combined expertise of each group has made the Maurice Wilkins Centre much more than just the sum of its parts. The cross disciplinary approach is very productive.

Recent advances in the biological sciences offer exciting opportunities for biotechnology and medicine. A key focus of the Wilkins Centre is to encourage entrepreneurial researchers with the flexibility to adapt to new technologies and research opportunities. In this cutting edge innovative environment exciting new projects have arisen that use knowledge, facilities, equipment and support from across all parts of the Centre.

The Wilkins Centre is led by eight principal investigators and associated with over 200 researchers across New Zealand.
