Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, The University of Auckland
The Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences at The University of Auckland offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Health Sciences, Nursing, Pharmacy, Medicine and Biomedical Science. It is also New Zealand's largest provider of medical and biomedical research.
The Faculty has developed a reputation for excellence in teaching and is the only health care training institute in New Zealand to offer multidisciplinary learning across its undergraduate degrees. It was the first medical school in the world to establish a department of Māori and Pacific health and actively promotes equity programmes for Māori and Pacific students.
The Faculty’s clinical schools in South Auckland, Waikato and Auckland City Hospital are important clinical research sites that promote a strong research profile, and encourage medical graduates to pursue research careers. Postgraduate study is one way for health professionals to stay abreast of current trends and to ensure they are providing only the very best advice and service. With this in mind, the Faculty offers postgraduate certificates, diplomas, masters and doctorate programmes in a wide range of subjects for doctors, nurses, pharmacists, health managers, policy makers and researchers.
The Faculty has a strong research and teaching culture and has been at the forefront of many medical breakthroughs. It is New Zealand’s largest provider of medical and biomedical research and is experienced working at the cutting edge of basic research, at the commercial biotechnology interface, in the clinical care setting and in the community. Major research initiatives in the Faculty include bone disease, cancer, perinatology, epidemiology, clinical trials, neuroscience, many aspects of population health, and nutrigenomics, the emerging discipline of tailoring foods to the genetic make-up of consumers.
The University has won substantial funding from the Foundation for Research, Science and Technology to create a dedicated centre for nutrigenomics research, one of the first of its kind in the world.
The University of Auckland is New Zealand’s top ranked tertiary institution according to the Performance Based Research Fund results released this year. Auckland is also the only New Zealand University invited to become a member of Universitas 21 - an international network of research intensive universities which cooperate towards high educational quality and international visibility.
