Biotech product development
There are many aspects to consider when you are taking a biotech product from the initial stages of design through testing and into the market place.
Planning is key to development
Product development is part of all biotechnology projects. Planning at the very beginning of each project is crucial.
It takes more than just a good idea to create a successful, marketable biotech product. From the design stages to full-scale production, science has to work hand-in-hand with market research, legal expertise, financial backers and government authorities. This takes through planning and good communication.

The original plan must be regularly updated as progress is made and markets or legal requirements change.
A New Zealand example
One example of a biotech product being developed in New Zealand is VivaGel™. VivaGel™ prevents the spread of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) by grabbing hold of the virus and destroying it.
VivaGel™ is being developed jointly by Industrial Research Limited (IRL) and Australian biotech company Starpharma. In January 2006, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved use of VivaGel in the US, and it is currently undergoing clinical trials.
