- Ulcerative colitis

A disease where the large intestine or colon has ulcers.
- Ultrastructure

The detailed structure of a biological specimen, such as a cell, tissue, or organ, which can only be observed using an electron microscope.
- Umbilical cord

The cord that connects a fetus to the placenta during pregnancy – it carries blood and nutrients to the growing fetus.
- UMF number

A rating of the antibacterial action of Mānuka honey. The number is equivalent to the percentage of phenol it takes to have the same effect. Mānuka honey with UMF 18+ for example can be used to heal wounds.
- Unique Mānuka Factor (UMF)

A substance found in Mānuka honey that has antibacterial activity.
