National Institute of Water & Atmospheric Research Taihoro Nukurangi (NIWA)
NIWA's mission is to provide a scientific basis for the sustainable management and development of New Zealand's atmospheric, marine and freshwater systems and associated resources.
NIWA’s Māori name Taihoro Nukurangi describes the work as studying the waterways and the interface between the earth and the sky. Taihoro is the flow and movement of water (from tai for ‘coast, tide’ and horo for ‘fast moving’). Nukurangi is the interface between the sea and the sky (i.e., the atmosphere). Together, they mean ‘where the waters meet the sky’.
Established in 1992 as one of nine New Zealand Crown Research Institutes (CRIs), NIWA operates as a stand-alone company with its own board of directors and its shares held by the Crown.
The work at NIWA includes research and consultancy, with clients ranging from community groups to large private companies, from regional councils to Government ministries. NIWA offers a variety of online services, some free to use, and some that require payment. They also hold information in a range of databases.
