Winner of the GenEthics Competition

03 Aug, 2006

Veronika Meduna catches up with the judges and final winner of the GenEthics competition, an annual essay competition for high schools.

Listen to audio: Winner of the GenEthics Competition

Duration: 12'38"

The GenEthics Competition this year had a scenario about genetic screening of newborn babies. Every year about 30 babies are identified with a serious metabolic disorder using this screen program. Should a mother be entitled to refuse a test? What if another mother wants more things tested for? High school students had to discuss the science, social, and ethical issues that might arise from each mother’s decision.
