A commitment to integrating environmental, social and economic best practice in their business has won natural health products company Comvita a Westpac Sustainable Business Award.
The Bay of Plenty firm received the 2006 IAG Trail Blazer Award in recognition of taking an active role in its local community, donating native trees to a planting programme and providing sport, primary school and beekeeping scholarships. They have also supported the Otanewainuku Kiwi Trust, the Waste Exchange and the Life Foundation in India, among
other causes.
Comvita also picked up the ‘Peoples Choice Award’ a category that gives businesses involved in sustainability an opportunity to choose one of their peers as a winner.
“We were delighted to win particularly against such well qualified entries and it is a proud time for the company to be so well rated by our peers,” Comvita’s Chief Executive Brett Hewlett says.
Retaining the company founder’s philosophy that business must put something back into the community has seen Comvita involved in several national and international environmental initiatives.
“Sustainability is at the core of what we do,” Mr Hewlett adds.
The company is also among the finalists in this year’s New Zealand Trade & Enterprise Export Awards. Winners will be announced at an awards dinner in November.
